John is a Licensed Masters Level Social Worker. He earned two Bachelor of Arts degrees at Austin College in 2002. One of his degrees was in Psychology and the other in Business Administration. In 2006, John received his Masters in the Science of Social Work from the University of Texas at Arlington. His studies were focused on direct clinical practice and much of his experience is in the field of addiction.
John has gained experience in various settings such as Austin State Hospital, where he worked on the child and adolescent psychiatric unit. He has also worked as a counselor at Turtle Creek Manor, which is an adult residential treatment facility in Dallas. At Turtle Creek Manor, John helped individuals suffering from dual-diagnoses, meaning they had been diagnosed with both a severe mental illness and chemical dependency. John currently helps out at a sober-living house in Dallas called the Gaston House, owned by Chico West. Residents at the Gaston House are males age 17-30 who are there due to their addiction to drugs and/or alcohol.
John has worked with people of all ages. So if you, or a loved one, are having difficulty dealing with some of life’s struggles then John would love to help. Many people are struggling with behavioral and emotional instability, whether it’s caused by substance abuse or an underlying psychological disorder. There is no need to feel embarrassed. You are no different than so many others. Healing begins when the denial is broken and people are ready for change.
John takes a positive approach to counseling, believing that individuals have tremendous resources to address life situations. John believes it is his role to help others understand the dynamics of their situation and to assist them in using their particular strengths to address certain issues.
While John has worked with people of all ages, his passion lies in working with adolescents and young adults. If you are struggling to understand your son or daughter’s behavior then John would love to help. If their behavior has become unmanageable or if you are worried that they may be using drugs or alcohol, then now is the time to act. Life experience goes a long way when working with people suffering from the symptoms of addiction. John remembers what it was like growing up as a teenager feeling that no one understands. John's ability to relate and allow his clients to feel they are not alone in their fight is something not all counselors can achieve.
